Jesus never succumbs to the three deceits of the devil

First Sunday of Lent

Reading 1

4Moses spoke to the people, saying: “The priest shall receive the basket from you
and shall set it in front of the altar of the LORD, your God. 5Then you shall declare before the Lord, your God, ‘My father was a wandering Aramean who went down to Egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien. But there he became a nation great, strong, and numerous.[1]

6When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us, imposing hard labor upon us,
7we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and He heard our cry and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8He brought us out of Egypt with His strong hand and outstretched arm, with terrifying power, with signs and wonders; 9and bringing us into this country, He gave us this land flowing with milk and honey.

10Therefore, I have now brought you the firstfruits of the products of the soil which you, O LORD, have given me.’ And having set them before the Lord, your God, you shall bow down in his presence.”

Responsorial Psalm

R. (compare with 15b) Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

1You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, 2say to the LORD, “My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

10No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent, 11For to His angels He has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways.

R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

12Upon their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13You shall tread upon the asp and the viper; you shall trample down the lion and the dragon.

R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

14Because he clings to me, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name. 15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress; I will deliver him and glorify him.

R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

Reading 2

8Brothers and sisters: What does Scripture say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart - that is, the word of faith that we preach, - 9for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

10For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11For the Scripture says, No one who believes in Him will be put to shame.

12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all,
enriching all who call upon Him. 13For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Verse Before The Gospel Matthew 4:4b

One does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

Gospel

1Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert[2][3] 2for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over He was hungry.[4]

3The devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4Jesus answered him, “It is written, One does not live on bread alone.”

5Then he took Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. 6The devil said to Him, “I shall give to you all this power and glory;  for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. 7All this will be yours, if you worship me.” 8Jesus said to him in reply, “It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and Him alone shall you serve.”

9Then he led Him to Jerusalem, made Him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,[5] 10for it is written: He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you,
11and: With their hands they will support You, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”

12Jesus said to him in reply, “It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.” 13When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time.[6]

Notes on Readings:

[1] Deuteronomy 26:5 - Aramean: either in reference to the origin of the patriarchs from Aram Naharaim ((compare with Genesis 24;10; 25:20;  28:531:20, 24, or merely in the sense of "nomad," in the same way as "Arab" was later used; compare with Jeremiah 3:2.

[2] Luke 4:1-13 - See the footnote on Matthew 4:1-11.

[3] Luke 4:1 - Filled with the Holy Spirit: as a result of the descent of the Spirit upon Him at His baptism (Luke 3:21-22), Jesus is now equipped to overcome the devil. Just as the Spirit is prominent at this early stage of Jesus' ministry Luke 4:1, 14, 18), so too it will be at the beginning of the period of the church in (Acts 1:4, 2:4, 17).

[4] Luke 4:2 - For forty days: the mention of forty days recalls the forty years of the wilderness wanderings of the Israelites during the Exodus (Deuteronomy 8:2).

[5] Luke 4:9 - To Jerusalem: the Lucan order of the temptations concludes on the parapet of the temple in Jerusalem, the city of destiny in Luke-Acts. It is in Jerusalem that Jesus will ultimately face His destiny (Luke 9:51); 13:33).

[6] Luke 4:13 - For a time: the devil's opportune time will occur before the passion and death of Jesus (Luke 22;3, 31, 32, 53).

Dear Humanity,

I personally encourage everyone to emulate JESUS' values on LOVE, FAITH, HOPE
and CHARITY, as the humanity has been a failure; which resulted to the more than two (2) years of pandemic and its after-effects on economy, not only here in the Philippines but worldwide.

And the saddest part of it, is that, it affected the POOREST of the POOR to even extremely be more poorer, in exchange of the affluent to be more richer.

Thank you and may GOD bless you and the whole family to have an enjoyed life's journey at home, Church, schools/universities, corporate commitments, public and places of interest.
